The Australian Services Union (Victorian Private Sector branch) labelled the Qantas decision to shed employees as short sighted and has vowed to fight for every job.
ASU Victorian Private Sector Branch Secretary Ingrid Stitt said that the Qantas announcement is devastating for the hard working staff.
“It’s outrageous that so many Qantas staff are going to bear the brunt of another bad business decision made by Qantas.
“ASU members are front line staff. They’re in customer service, call centre and at check-in desks. These are the people who make Qantas the company that it is today.
“The Union will fight for each and every one of the thousands of jobs that Qantas puts on the line.
“For most of Qantas’ history, the unions and management have worked together to ensure a safe strong and high quality national airline.
“Today’s decision shows a disregard for Australian industry, Australian workers and the safety and integrity of the Qantas airline.
“Wages and conditions are not the problem at Qantas. Bad business decisions have lead to the loss in profit. Perhaps we should look first at the management of the 5 CEOs across the Qantas Group responsible these bad decisions?
“Qantas is putting their reputation and the satisfaction of Australian customers on the line with today’s announcement.
“The ASU will fight for each and every job,” Ms Stitt said.
