The Australian Services Union, Victorian Private Sector Branch pays tribute to the Hon Joan Kirner AC as a strong leader and champion for Victorian women of all ages.
As a union represented by over 70 percent female membership, we recognise the extraordinary and lasting contribution Joan Kirner made to advocating for women’s empowerment in Victoria.
Her perseverance as an advocate for women during her time as a politician and eventually as one of the key founders of Emily’s List Australia stand as evidence of her commitment to women’s issues during and after her political life.
In a time where working women are facing so many challenges in the workplace, the legacy of Joan Kirner stands as a reminder and motivation to keep up the fight.
Joan Kirner did not shy away from a hard battle, and during a difficult political time in Victoria, she had the support and respect of her peers to step in as the first female Victorian Premier; inspiring generations of women, political or otherwise.
As Victoria’s first woman Premier and as a strong leader of our State, Joan Kirner will continue to inspire generations of Victorian working women.
